Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Tutors.
What is special education tutoring?
Special education tutors help students with mild to severe cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities. Special needs tutors modify the general education curriculum to meet the child's individual needs and involve themselves in each student's social and behavioral development.
What is disability in special education?
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) identifies 13 disability categories where special education should be provided.
Auditory Impairment (AI) – refers to a hearing loss not categorized by deafness.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – mainly affects a child's social and communication skills and behavior.
Deafness – covers kids who can't hear most or all sounds, even with a hearing aid.
Deaf-Blindness (DB) – covers kids with both severe hearing and vision loss that requires unique programs.
Emotional Disturbance (ED) – various mental health issues such as anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
Intellectual Disability (ID) – covers disabilities such as below-average intellectual abilities, poor communication or social skills, and poor self care. One example is down syndrome.
Multiple Impairments (MI) – a child with multiple disabilities in this list.
Orthopedic Impairment (OI) – covers impairments in kids who lack function or ability in their bodies, such as cerebral palsy.
Other Health Impairment (OHI) – conditions that limit a child's strength, energy, or alertness such as ADHD.
Specific learning disability (SLD) – conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, or nonverbal learning disability.
Speech or Language Impairment (SI) – covers difficulties such as stuttering, pronouncing words, making sounds with the voice, or understanding words.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – injury to the brain caused by a physical force.

Our daughter LOVES TLC, and has from her very first session! She absolutely looks forward to each and every session, even getting up early on Saturday mornings, without complaint and eager to go for two hours. Her favorite thing about TLC is the clinicians, and although she is most fond of one in-particular, she's happy to work with everyone. Paisley's favorite activity at TLC is AMPS "because it feels like games, even though I know it isn't, and it helps me with my response speed." From a parents perspective, it's wonderful to see that my child is happy to be participating in this therapy. Paisley's ability to sound out and spell words was so difficult before TLC that she would fight tooth-and-nail to avoid writing, but now she willingly writes and types her homework assignments, and is improving in her ability to spell words that she wouldn't even attempt before. Most importantly, she's able to get her thoughts out on paper without the agony she used to experience while trying to express herself. Her confidence has increased, she tries when she used to give up, and she's having successes in learning that we feared she might never experience - like getting 100% on a Math quiz last week - Hooray! We couldn't feel more blessed and grateful to have found TLC!

Having Debbie tutor my daughters has been one of the best opportunities that I could have given them to excel in math . My daughters perform at different levels of rigor in math ranging from standard courses to Honors and AP courses and Debbie explains math in a way that they each can understand. My daughters always look forward to tutoring, which clearly speaks to Debbie's work ethic and ability to connect and teach a high school student. With her knowledge and ample quantity of formulas and methods, Debbie will have a way to demonstrate how to solve a math problem in a way that your child can understand. She knows that each child learns differently. Debbie puts the student's needs and interests first. She understands the hectic schedule of the student and finds a time that works best for the student. She is accommodating with the schedule and squeezes in extra hours during finals week to help her students. My daughters have excelled in math and feel confident with their math knowledge and skills because of Debbie.
